Gert and his wife live in Merchtem, Belgium, and he has had partially impaired vision since childhood. During the busy seasons, Gert works in orchards; otherwise, he remains at home and oversees the household. Gert did not have many problems in school, but he was never very interested in research, which is why he did not pursue higher education. He began working right away and has worked in a variety of settings over the years, including building sites and the city’s green department. Gert is able to work all day as long as he can be outside and use his hands.
