Maurice grew up in the impoverished suburbs of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (former Zaire), before being adopted at the age of six and moving to Antwerp, Belgium. Maurice acquired night blindness as an infant in Kinshasa as a result of chronic vitamin A deficiency, a condition that remains a plague among children in many developing countries.Maurice’s disease causes him to not only see badly at night, but it also takes some time for his vision to switch from brightly lit locations to dark ones. His contrast vision has also deteriorated significantly.
